Without a credit history, it can be hard to get approved for credit. A few common options help you build one.
Common first steps
- A secured credit card: you put down a deposit that usually becomes your limit
- A credit-builder loan from a credit union or community bank
- Becoming an authorized user on a family member's card with a good history
- A student card, if you're in school
Use it safely
- Charge one small, regular bill and pay it in full each month
- Set up autopay
- Check that the account reports to all three bureaus
- Be cautious with offers that charge high fees to "build credit"
